Whit S. Bridgers

JACKSON – Whit Stephenson Bridgers, age 74, passed away January 15, 2015 at Carolina House of Morehead City, North Carolina. Whit was born April 21, 1940 in Suffolk, Virginia, the son of the late Howard Bridgers and Marion Stephenson Bridgers. He was also preceded in death by his son, Whit S. “Tiger” Bridgers; his sisters, Margaret Bridgers and Mary Dean Dawkins; and his former wife, Phyllis Bridgers.

He lived most of his life in Northampton County, North Carolina and was a life long member of Jackson Baptist Church and a devoted Christian, son and father to his family and friends. Whit was a Mason with the Seaboard Lodge and avid member of the Eastern Star and the Lions Club of Jackson and volunteer with the Lakeland Arts Center and Medoc State Park. Whit retired from Odom Department of Corrections, working many years as the prison administrator.

Survivors include his daughter, Cassandra Bridgers Burt and husband Travis of Emerald Isle, NC; his grandchildren, Branden Burt, Kirsten Burt, Sandra Bridgers and Chase Bridgers; his sister, Susan Bridgers Walton of Burlington, NC; his brother, Jospeh Thomas Bridgers and his wife Betty of Rich Square, NC; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Jackson Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.
