Carolyn D. Steele

GREENVILLE – Carolyn D. Steele of Greenville, NC passed peacefully Friday, November 14, 2014 at home. She was born October 28, 1930 in Northampton County (Pendleton) to Roger Williams Davis and Ethel Woodard Davis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mildred Hampton, Alice Vann, and Claire Barrett; brother, Alvin Davis; former husband, George Clinton Steele IV; and very dear friend Scott Burns.

Left to cherish her memory are special partner, Elwood “Shine” King; children, George Clinton Steele V and wife Donna of Winterville, Donna S. Shawver and husband John of Carolina Beach, and James D. Steele and wife Donna of Ahoskie; grandchildren, Tamara Burnette, Robbie Maxbauer, Carmen Byrum, Melisa Poindexter, Shea Steele, George Clinton Steele VI, and Mariah Steele; along with 12 great grandchildren; nieces, Brenda Barrett and Amelia Vann Howard; nephews, Stanford Vann and Bruce Barrett; and many dear friends.

Carolyn attended Severn High School and Chowan College where she played basketball. After marriage, she made her home in Winton, NC where she raised her three children, and was active in Winton Baptist Church. Beyond a life of helping and serving others until the very end, her career was spent in social work with Hertford County Department of Social Services and then retiring from Pitt County Social Services. Her passions in life included her family and friends, the beach, music, dancing and caring for others. She instilled in her children and grandchildren a desire to live life to the fullest and to appreciate what is most important in life.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 22 at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church in Pendleton, NC at 11 am, followed by an interment and fellowship at the church for family and friends. Memorials may be made to Roberts Chapel Baptist Church PO Box 128, Pendleton, NC 27862.
