WINTON – Mrs. Minnie Flood Reynolds, 98, a native of HertfordCounty, departed this life on October 5, 2014. Though a life-long resident of Winton, she has resided for the past two and a half years in Cary, NC with her son, R. Gilbert Reynolds and family. However, her deep appreciation for the people of Winton continued until the end of her life.

Mrs. Reynolds began her teaching career in the historic Jarvisburg Colored School in Currituck County. After one year there, she began teaching first grade at her beloved alma mater, the C.S. Brown School in Winton. She taught in that school for more than forty years. Following her retirement, she continued teaching in her home without compensation. She welcomed any child who was in need of academic help or social development. She provided school materials from her own resources to any needy child.

Mrs. Reynolds was the first born of the nine children of Willie and Vancie Flood. Through her own initiative, she financed her own education at what is now Elizabeth City State University. She would later help to finance the education of six of her siblings, five of which became teachers. She taught her younger siblings in the home and instilled in them an appreciation for serious study. She remained an anchor for her family until her death.

Mrs. Reynolds was predeceased by her husband, David Reynolds; her father, Willie W. Flood; her mother, Vancie Vann Flood Parker; her brothers, Henry W. Flood, Ashley L. Flood, and James E. Flood; and her sisters, Virginia Flood Burford, Willie Flood Anderson, and Nancy Flood Hall.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, R. Gilbert Reynolds and his wife, Jean; her grandchildren, Shaune (Jamie), Justin and Hannah, all of Cary, NC; her sister, Josephine Flood Whiting of Richmond, VA; her brother, Dudley E. Flood of Raleigh, NC; two great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Her home going services will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at the C.S. Brown Cultural Center in Winton. The receiving of friends will begin at 11 a.m. and the service will begin at 12 noon. Interment will follow the service at the Winton First Baptist Church Cemetery.
