GARYSBURG – A fugitive wanted in two states was arrested here Thursday after being discovered hiding in a closet inside a Garysburg residence.

Curtis Antonio Ramsey, 35 of Garysburg, was taken into custody by the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office. He was wanted on outstanding warrants from an incident that took place on May 15 on Sykes Lane in Garysburg.

NCSO Investigator Courtney Williams, Deputy William James and Captain Chuck Hasty were following up on information about the case on Sykes Lane when they located Ramsey hiding in a closet. Ramsey was arrested without incident and charged with first degree sex offense, assault on a female, and communicating threats. He was also charged with being a fugitive from justice from the State of Maryland, facing drugs and child support charges there.

Ramsey is currently being held without bond because the Northampton charges are related to domestic violence. He was given a court date of June 12 after his first appearance in court on Thursday afternoon.

Also arrested in the case was Amanda Richardson, 25 of Garysburg. She was taken into custody at the residence and charged with harboring a fugitive. Richardson was given a $1,000 bond and June 12 court date.

The local charges against Ramsey developed on May 15 when NCSO deputies responded to Sykes Lane in for a “911 hang-up” call.  Sgt. Jimmy Pair and Deputy Curtis Boone found the residence door open, and entered the residence for a welfare check. No one was located inside.

A short time later, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office received a call about an assault and sexual assault, HCSO Investigator Harold Phillips contacted Hasty about the incident.

The victim was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids for treatment and to meet with law enforcement officers. Hasty said the victim told investigators that she was trying to get her former boyfriend, Curtis Antonio Ramsey, to leave the residence, but he refused.

“When the victim tried to leave, the incident turned violent,” Hasty said. “Mr. Ramsey allegedly threw the victim across the room and physically assaulted her.  The victim tried to stop the assault by pulling on Mr. Ramsey’s hair, but he continued assaulting her. Mr. Ramsey then sexually assaulted the victim.  At some point the victim was able to get away from Mr. Ramsey and get in her car and leave.”
