Results across the Roanoke-Chowan area are unofficial at this hour as voters in Bertie, Gates, Hertford and Northampton counties cast ballots in Tuesday’s 2014 North Carolina Primary.

The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald has compiled county-by-county totals for the R-C region, concentrating on the local and district races that will impact our future.

According to the unofficial numbers, two local incumbents failed to maintain their seats in the North Carolina General Assembly. Incumbent House District 5 Representative Annie Mobley (3,655 votes) was defeated by current Hertford County Commissioner Howard Hunter III (5,236 votes). Hunter earns the Democratic Party’s nomination and moves to face Republican Sidney Pierce III of Gatesville in November’s General Election where the winner will represent House District 5 (Bertie, Gates, Hertford and Pasquotank counties).

In a three-way race for State Senate District 3, six-term incumbent Clark Jenkins of Tarboro (8,718) failed to earn another term as he was defeated by Northampton County educator and School Board member Erica Smith-Ingram (10,550 votes combined in the 8-county Senate District). Alan Mizelle of Windsor tallied 2,545 votes in that race.

In a highly competitive race for the District Attorney’s seat in the newly combined Judicial District 6, Valerie Asbell (11,213 unofficial votes) defeated Melissa Pelfrey (9,644). Asbell is the current DA of District 6B (Bertie, Hertford and Northampton), while Pelfrey serves District 6A (Halifax) as DA. Those two Districts will merge effective Jan. 1, 2015.

In NC House District 27 (Halifax and Northampton counties), incumbent Michael Wray of Gaston (8,434 votes) defeated Franklin D. Williams Jr. of Weldon (6,107 votes).
