MURFREESBORO – Catherine Stewart Umphlett, 83, formerly of Winder Street, Murfreesboro, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in Creekside Care & Rehabilitation Center, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Umphlett was born in Cass County, IL on January 29, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Arthur M. and Louise Duncheon Stewart. The retired owner and operator of Walter’s Grill, she was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Ahoskie, and had served as a volunteer with Vidant Hospice.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Alton Umphlett; a sister, Doretha Campbell; and a brother, Arthur Stewart.

Surviving are two sisters, Rosemary Miller of Annapolis, MD, and Joyce Nelson of Holmes, FL; two brothers, Leo Stewart and John Stewart, both of Petersburg, IL; two step-children, Sharon U. Bailey of Stafford, VA and Tommy Umphlett of Eure; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held Wednesday, April 30, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church by the Rev. Bill Long. Burial will follow in Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, Eure, with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, handling arrangements.

A time of visitation with the family will be held in the church the hour prior to services.
