WINDSOR – A Bertie County woman was struck and killed after the lawn tractor she was driving was hit from the rear by an 18-wheeler near here late Monday evening.

According to the NC Highway Patrol report, Norma Jean Haney, 49, of Windsor, was operating the lawn tractor in the right-hand lane of US 13, two-tenths of a mile south of the Windsor town limits, when the mower was hit from behind by a log truck, also traveling south, operated by 48-year-old Calvin Gray Corey of Washington, NC.  She died on the scene.

Trooper J.C. Copeland said Haney was wearing dark clothing at the time the lawn tractor was struck which may have contributed to the accident, and that Corey stated that he did not see her in the evening dusk.  The accident occurred shortly after 8 p.m.

Corey did not suffer any injuries as a result of the accident, but was emotionally shaken by the incident.  No charges have been filed against him.

Haney was believed to be traveling on the lawn tractor in a direction away from her home.

The fatality is the fifth in Bertie County for the year 2014 and eighth in Troop A-District II comprised of Bertie, Hertford, and Gates counties.
