WINTON – The Winton Farmers Market opened to a large crowd on Friday.

Farmers Market Coordinator Jerry Storey estimated that within the first two hours the market was open 250 people made their way to the corner of Tryon and King Streets.

“The community has been really supportive,” he said.

The produce offered to customers included lettuce, salad greens, herbs, asparagus, sweet potatoes and fresh seafood. The market is open each Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Como grower Michelle Richard was among the many vendors who sold out on their offerings.

“I’m thrilled,” she said.

Richard said she wanted to be a part of the market because of its emphasis on healthy eating. She sells pesticide free herbs and produce as well as a few craft items.

Sterling Winborne, a Harrellsville farmer, said he was happy with the outcome of the first day of the market.

“It’s awesome, couldn’t have planned to do any better,” he said. “We (sold out) early, but now we know to be prepared next week.”
