Old Man Winter is on his way.

The National Weather Service is predicting as much as four inches of snow for the Roanoke-Chowan area beginning sometimes tonight (Thursday).

At this time it appears the heaviest snowfall (2-to-4 inches) will be in Northampton County. For that reason, the NWS Office in Wakefield, VA has placed Northampton under a Winter Storm Warning, beginning at 9 p.m. tonight through 4 a.m. Friday.

NWS officials are currently predicting the rain will quickly change to snow this evening and begin to accumulate. A brief period of heavy snowfall this evening will cause rapid accumulations to occur. Snow is expected to accumulate on roads and create hazardous driving conditions. The heaviest snow accumulations will be on grassy areas.

For Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties, the NWS said to expect 1-to-2 inches of snow between 9 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday, with a brief period of heavy snow that will accumulate on roadways and grassy areas. Those three counties are currently under a Winter Weather Advisory.

Weather conditions will improve on Friday, but it will be cold with a high of 41 and an overnight low in the upper teens.

Saturday’s forecast calls for sunny skies with a high of 52 and a low of 35.
