Alverta P. Joyner

RICH SQUARE – Mrs. Alverta P. Joyner, age 96, of Rich Square died at the Kindred Healthcare Center in Ahoskie on Monday, January 14, 2013.  She was born in Bertie County to the late Eva Parker and the late William A. Parker.

Mrs. Joyner graduated from Roxobel Kelford School.  During her high school career she was a star basketball player and won many awards in track and field.  She was married to the late Bertram Joyner and they made their home in Rich Square.  Mrs. Joyner worked beside her husband in the diary and later in the Rich Square Florist.  She will be remembered for her cooking and beautiful Iris gardens.

Also preceding her in death are her brothers, Junius, Carlisle, Milton and Grover Parker.

Survivors include her sister, Emma Bracy of Roxobel; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, with the Rev. Josh Parsons officiating.
