AHOSKIE – Mr. Hugh Travis Jones, age 97 of Ahoskie, died Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Jones was born May 10, 1915 in Camden County, NC, the son of the late M.C. Jones and Alice Sawyer Jones.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Alice Markham Jones; and his children Bill Jones, and Miriam Jones Askew.

He was a faithful member of the Lions Club, first joining the Seaboard Lions Club and then to the Jackson Lions Club. He then became a member of the Ahoskie Lions Club.  During his years as a Lion, he served in many capacities in many offices, including District Governor. He was a member of the Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a sister, Miriam Jones James of Elizabeth City; a granddaughter, Mary Alice Askew of New York; his son-in-law, Garland Askew of Raleigh; and several nieces and  nephews.

A graveside service will be held, Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ahoskie Cemetery in Ahoskie with the Rev. Lee Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lions International Fund or the Ahoskie United Methodist Church.
