AHOSKIE – Thanks to the keen nose of a dog, a Powellsville man was arrested for drug possession here Tuesday morning.

According to Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh, 51-year-old Claudie Lindwood Wilson of 105 Raynor Street was placed under arrest after APD officers observed a clear plastic baggie with white powder like substance inside a vehicle registered to Wilson.

Wilson was charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed under a $3,000 secured bond and jailed at the Hertford County Detention Center in Winton.

Fitzhugh said that at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, APD Sgt. Michael Kellett and K-9 “Nero” conducted an air sniff on Ahoskie Commons public vehicle area. After an alert was given on one of the six vehicles in the lot, Sgt. Kellett and Lt. Andres’ Snape contacted the owner of the vehicle.

“The owner of the vehicle opened the driver’s door and a clear plastic baggie with white powder like substance was observed by the officers in clear view,” Fitzhugh stated. “At that point Mr. Wilson was arrested without further incident.”

Fitzhugh offered praise for both officers as well as “Nero” for a job well done.
