Clayton Llewellyn Godwin

AHOSKIE – Mr. Clayton Llewellyn Godwin, 83, passed away peacefully in his son’s home on the Chowan River surrounded by his family on Friday, October 26, 2012.

Mr. Godwin was born October 2, 1929 in the Center Grove community of Bertie County where he lived most of his life. He was the son of the late Clayton Sherwood and Elsie Callis Godwin and was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Gertrude Holloman Godwin.

After graduating from Ahoskie High School in 1949, Mr. Godwin attended Wake Forest College for one year before returning to marry his high school sweetheart.

Survivors include his daughters, Ramona Louise Godwin of Williamston, and Diane Johnson and husband, Steve, of Colerain; sons, Timothy Llewellyn Godwin of Grifton, Andrew Gordon Godwin of Colerain and Charlton Holloman Godwin and wife, Dorothy, of Colerain; one brother, Charles Sparkman Godwin of Raleigh; six grandchildren, Kevin S. Johnson and his wife, Erica, of Colerain, Leon L. Godwin and his wife, Brie, of Mebane, Natalie Godwin of Raleigh, Brandon Godwin of Plymouth, and Morgan Godwin and Patrick Godwin, both of Colerain; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander on Monday, October 29, 2012 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vidant Hospice.
