BLACK ROCK – A vehicle crashed into a Bertie County home here early Thursday morning.

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper M.D. Simmons, Lamantric Joyner was traveling on US 17 north when he either fell asleep or ran into fog.

The result was the 2005 International box truck he was operating crossing the center line and striking a mail box at 2247 US 17 North.  Joyner reportedly tried to stop the truck, but was unsuccessful as it continued through the front yard of the home and struck the side of the house.

Inside, a person was sleeping in the bedroom that was struck by the vehicle and was injured. The victim was taken to Vidant Chowan Hospital in Edenton before being flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. The extent of her injuries is not known at this time.

At the time of the incident, Joyner was delivering mail for the United States Post Office. He was not an employee of USPS, but was a contractor.

Trooper Simmons said the incident was still under investigation.

Joyner has been charged with careless and reckless driving and failure to wear a seatbelt.

The incident happened about one mile west of Black Rock, according to the report.
