WILLIAMSTON – A bicyclist from Windsor was killed in a traffic accident approximately two miles north of here in Bertie County on Tuesday.

40-year-old Anthony Lewis was traveling north on US 13/17 just a mile into Bertie County. He was pulling a trailer on the back of his bicycle when it was struck by a Dodge truck owned by B&S Enterprises of Hertford.

The impact of the crash threw Lewis from his bicycle and he came to rest on the shoulder of the road. A report from Highway Patrol Trooper J.O. Walter said the driver of the truck, 28-year-old Andrew Owens of Greenville, returned and stayed with the cyclist until emergency services arrived.

Lewis was wearing a reflectorized vest at the time of the mishap, according to the NCHP. The accident occurred at approximately 5:27 p.m.

Following the investigation, Trooper Walter charged Owens with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

The fatality was the fifth in 2012 in Bertie County and number 10 for NCHP Troop A, District II which serves Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties.
