Edenton downs Ahoskie

AHOSKIE – Edenton Post 40 beat Ahoskie Post 102 4-1 in a Senior American Legion game here Monday night.

The game was tied at zero through five innings as pitchers Scott Edge of Edenton and Billy Nixon of Ahoskie kept the game scoreless.

Edenton finally broke through with a run in the top of the sixth stanza.

Ahoskie tried to answer in the bottom of the inning when Tyler Burden singled with two outs, but he was left stranded and Post 40 maintained a 1-0 lead.

Edenton added two more in the top of the eighth and edged ahead 3-0.

In the bottom of the inning, Ahoskie scored its only run.

Cecil Lowe singled to left and Timmy Whitlow reached on an error. With two out, Marvin Harrell singled to left to load the bases.

Nixon delivered an RBI-single to plate Lowe and cut the lead to 3-1, but a pop fly ended the inning.

Post 40 put across an insurance run in the top of the ninth to take a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Adison Eure got on board with a lead-off walk. A double play and a fly out ended the game, however.

Nixon pitched seven innings for Post 102 allowing one run on four hits while striking out nine. Burden tossed two innings and allowed three runs on one hit while striking out two.

Edge, a former Lawrence Academy standout, pitched five innings for Edenton, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out six. He also had three hits to pace Post 40 at the plate.

Ahoskie tallied five hits. Lowe, Burden, Harrell, Nixon and Clay Robbins recorded one each.

The loss dropped Ahoskie to 6-15 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
