Cary tops Ahoskie

CARY – Cary swept a Junior American Legion doubleheader from Ahoskie Post 102 Sunday afternoon.

The home team won by counts of 17-0 and 6-3.

In the first game, Ahoskie had just three hits – one each by Tyler Small, Tyler Jones and Brandon Terry – as they suffered a 17-0 loss.

Eric Ortiz, Bryan Merritt and Small all pitched for Post 102.

In game two, Cary scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth and went on to a 6-3 win.

Ahoskie opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first frame.

Merritt reached on an error before Ortiz and Ryan Weaver drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Merritt scored when Jones walked with the bases loaded and then Ortiz came home on a Clay Barmer RBI-single.

Cary responded with five runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead, but Ahoskie didn’t give up.

Post 102 scored in the top of the fifth fame to close the gap to 5-3.

Ackerman Grace singled and went to second on a Merritt sacrifice bunt. Grace then came home on a Weaver RBI-single.

Cary, however, scored in the bottom of the sixth and added insurance as they held on for the win.

Grace pitched four innings for Post 102 while Stephen Umphlett tossed the final two innings. Grace and Barmer led Ahoskie with two hits each.

Ahoskie is now 2-4 overall and will play at Elizabeth City tonight (Thursday). First pitch is 7 p.m.
