BELHAVEN – The Lady Rams picked up their first win of the season last week.

Ridgecroft’s young softball team jumped on Pungo Christian Academy with 18 runs in the first frame and rolled to a 24-7 victory.

“I was pleased with our first win, especially coming on the road,” Rams’ skipper Nichole Hughes said. “We played as well as could be expected being so young, but we are growing into a more mature team.”

Erin Cooke was the winning pitcher for the Rams while Emily Grace came in for relief work.

Cooke was a stellar 3-for-4 at the plate as well.

In the first frame, seven of the first eight batters reached base and scored. Cooke scored three times in the inning while Bailey Vann, Grace, Lauren Colson and Roxie Daniels scored twice each.

Neither team scored in the second and Pungo rallied for five runs in the third, but Ridgecroft scored three more in the fourth and another trio in the fifth to secure the victory.

The Lady Rams improved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Tarheel Independent Conference.

Days earlier, Ridgecroft suffered a 6-4 setback to Community Christian School.

“We played well defensively and did well putting the bat on the ball,” Hughes said of that contest. “I am very proud of the way we played and couldn’t be happier.”

The teams were tied in the fourth inning, but CCS rallied for two in the bottom of the fifth to secure their fifth win of the season.
