PLYMOUTH – Bertie High School suffered a tough loss here last week.

The Falcons, who topped Plymouth High School at home, dropped a 9-8 decision to the Vikings in extra innings.

Bertie took an early lead in the contest by scoring in the second stanza.

With two out, Javier Pagola walked. He then scored when Matthew Evans singled and an error was committed on the play. The result was a 1-0 lead for the Falcons.

Plymouth came back to score a run in the fourth and five more in the fifth as they secured a 6-1 edge, but the Falcons came back.

In the sixth inning, Austin Dunlow led off with a single and took second on an error. Following a groundout, Dunlow came home on a Pagola RBI-single that cut the lead to 6-2.

The Vikings raised their lead to six (8-2) when they added another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Falcons came down to their last at-bat, however, and roared back to send the game to extra frames.

With one out, Alex Harmon walked before Adam Cowand reached on an error. Tommy Cowan then walked to load the bases. Following a strike out, the Falcons got a two-run double by Chris Johnson and then a two-run single by Pagola.

Pagola went to third on a passed ball and then scored when Evans reached on an error. Evans stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. He then raced home on another passed ball to tie the game at 8-all.

The Vikings won the game when Hunter Cook led off with a single and scored on an RBI-single with one out.

Cowand pitched 4.1 innings in the contest allowing five hits and six runs, three of which were earned. He struck out four. Hunter White then tossed 1.2 innings allowing three hits, two runs and one earned run. Alex Harmon suffered the loss by pitching 1.1 innings allowing one run and two hits with one strike out.

Offensively, the Falcons were paced by Pagola who was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Evans added a 2-for-3 day that included two RBIs. Austin Dunlow was 1-for-4 while Cowan and Cowand were each 1-for-5. Harmon was 0-for-1 but had three walks and was hit by a pitch.

The loss dropped the Falcons to 1-3.
