Hey Hawks fans!

March is a crazy month in the athletic department… here is a complete update:

Congratulations to the Women’s Basketball team.  What a season!

The Hawks made quite a run in the CIAA Basketball Tournament last week.  Ransheda Jenning’s shot with :04 left in the game knocked off Fayetteville, followed by a 52-38 dismantling of Virginia Union led the Hawks to their first ever CIAA semi-final appearance.

On top of all that, the squad had the opportunity to meet and speak with Michelle Obama.  At the conclusion of the tournament, Talaya Lynch and Janelle Murphy were named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team.  Wow – what a week!

The men’s team fell in the first round in a tough loss to Livingstone.

Tori Lewis represented Chowan at the tournament on behalf of the CU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  She participated in various community service events throughout the week, and also got to meet and work with other SAAC representatives from schools in the CIAA.

Jena’y Nelson, SAAC Representative and member of the tennis team was named second-runner up in the Miss CIAA competition.  This is a great honor for Jena’y individually, and also for Chowan.  Congratulations Jena’y!

Speaking of tennis, both the men’s and women’s team are headed to Hilton Head, South Carolina for matches over spring break.  On Tuesday, they’ll take on the Tiffin University Dragons, and they face off against Edinboro University of PA on Wednesday.

The golf team has had a successful start to their season.  Just a few weeks ago, they finished third place at the ESCU Spring Classic, and the next day finished in first place at the ECSU Spring Classic at The Pines.   Cliff Forbes turned in a low round of 71.  This weekend, they head to the CIAA Southern in Clayton.

The softball team leaves for Raleigh this weekend to play in the CIAA Round-up.  We’ll play all the teams in the South Division of the conference.  We return to our home field on Wednesday at noon for a doubleheader against Pace University.

The baseball team will also be in the Raleigh area this weekend.  They play Shaw University on Saturday and Sunday.  Earlier this week, the Hawks battled in a tough 2-1 loss to #17 USC-Aiken.  The team is showing a lot of potential early in the season, and they are playing solid competition every time they hit the field.

Football kicks off their spring season in the next few weeks.  They will have a Spring Game on April 20 at 8 p.m. – come check it out!

And last but not least, the bowling team will compete in the CIAA Championship in two weeks in Durham. Good luck!

GO HAWKS!
