WINTON – It promises to be the “coolest” event of the winter.

As a unique fundraiser, Special Olympics of Hertford County is planning a Polar Plunge on Saturday, Feb. 12. If you dare, take a brief dip in Chowan River in front of Riverside Restaurant, located at 325 Tuscarora Beach Road near Winton.

Registration on the day of the event begins at 11 a.m. The plunge will take place at 12:30 p.m.

The event – tabbed as “Freezin’ for a Reason” – will help raise funds to provide year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults living with intellectual disabilities.

Other activities planned at the plunge include a Chinese auction, door prizes/raffles and free hot chocolate as well as great food available for purchase at Riverside Restaurant.

Those interested in participating are asked to solicit at least $35 in donations from family, friends, businesses, co-workers, etc. Note: a minimum $35 donation is needed to take the plunge as well as earn a long-sleeved event T-shirt. Those pre-registering no later than Jan. 24 will be guaranteed a T-shirt on the day of the event.

Be sure to bring a friend or family member to hold your towel while you brave the cold waters of the Chowan River. You can choose to simply place your big toe in the water or opt to go into waist-deep water. Whichever option you choose, be reminded to wear an old pair of shoes.

All participants will be required to sign a “Release From Liability” form on the day of the event.

You can pre-register by contacting Lauri Heckler at Hertford County High School or by calling her at 395-1395.

Make checks payable to Special Olympics North Carolina.
