AHOSKIE – Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a two-day Event.

January 17^th of this year will mark the 25^th anniversary of Dr. King’s federal holiday. The purpose of the two-day event is to provide an opportunity for the community to take part in celebrating and contributing through service.

On Sunday, January 16, the 31^st annual tribute will be celebrated at Piney Woods Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 2529 US 13 Hwy N. Ahoskie, at 4 p.m.  The guest speaker will be the Honorable Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II.

Rev. Barber is the President of the North Carolina’s NAACP.  He is also the pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church of Disciples of Christ, Goldsboro, NC.  The theme at this annual celebration is “The Dreams of Yesterday, The Realities of Today, and The Hopes of Tomorrow.”

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a public service non-profit organization.  They ask the community for consideration in giving a donation to keep the “Life and Legacy” of Dr. King alive.  All donations will go directly to The King Center located in Atlanta, Georgia.  Your contribution will continue to assist with the operation of The King Center and allow young boys and girls around the world to be educated about the life of Rev. The Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter was awarded a “Martin Luther King, Jr. Grant.”  This grant was awarded through the North Carolina Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission.  One of the objectives of this grant is to develop programs and projects in the Roanoke Chowan community to keep the Life and Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. alive.   The March is being developed as a community project to bring the R-C community together in celebrating and remembering the Civil Rights Leader, Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.

On Monday, January 17 there will be a march and celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. in Ahoskie.  Line-up will begin at 9 a.m. and the  march will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunset Ave. to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and will conclude at New Ahoskie Missionary Baptist Church (401 Hayes St.).

After the march, there will be a program at New Ahoskie Baptist Church.  The guest speaker for this program will be Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Walker, Pastor of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, NC. Rev. Dr. Walker has also served as past chair of the NC Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission.
