CONNARITSA – Speed appears to have been one of two culprits in an accident near this crossroads community Monday night.

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper A.S. Genao, Monica Latonya Watford, 37, of Aulander was operating a vehicle approximately 90 miles per hour headed north on N.C. 305 when it struck an obstacle in the road and overturned.

“The vehicle struck an object in the road, which at this time seems to have been a rock-like substance,” Trooper Genao said. “The vehicle hit the rock; the driver overcorrected and right off the right hand side of the road.”

The report said once the vehicle left the road way, it struck a ditch and overturned approximately three times before coming to rest on its top in a yard.

Watford was transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital where she was treated, but two passengers in her vehicle were airlifted by EastCare to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

The passengers were Arabein Watford, 13, and Marcia Beverly, 35, also of Aulander. Watford was treated and released from Pitt Memorial and Beverly is listed in good condition.

Trooper Genao cited Watford for traveling 90 mph in a 55 mph zone and careless and reckless driving.

The Trooper also expressed appreciation to the Ahoskie Police Department for their assistance in interviewing the passengers of the vehicle.
