AHOSKIE – American Legion Post-102’s junior baseball team completed a two-game home field sweep of Edenton Post-40 Saturday with a 14-3 non-conference win.

The game was shortened due to the heat and the 10-run rule.

Jim Porter, whose walk-off double won the first game, came through again in the nightcap with a solo homer. Shawn Holloway and Joseph Eure drove in three runs each for Ahoskie while Darren Armstrong belted a two-run homer to end the game.

Brock Meher, a southpaw eighth-grader, picked up the win on the mound, striking out four and walking one even though he surrendered three earned on six hits.

“With solid left-handed pitching like that he’s got a spot on this team,” said a smiling Ahoskie coach, Wayne Hill, “and Porter not only did it with his bat, he also saved us a couple of runs with some great catches in right field.”

Ahoskie opened the scoring in the first inning with D.J. Cook getting a base hit to right field followed by a double by Shawn Holloway to put runners in scoring position.

Joseph Eure’s deep sacrifice fly plated Cook and moved Holloway to third where he scored on a sac-fly by Austin Britton for a 2-0 Ahoskie lead.

With two on in the top of the second, Porter made a running catch to preserve at least one run before Meher struck out the next two batters and ended the threat.

In the bottom of the frame, Ahoskie scored five more runs, all coming with two outs. Meher drew a base-on-balls and then advanced to third on back-to-back passed balls. Cook walked to put runners on the corners before Holloway drove in both with a liner up the middle.

A pair of wild pitches put Holloway on third before Eure collected his third RBI of the game and a 5-0 Ahoskie lead. Austin Britton got the final hit of the inning and advanced to third on a two-base error before he and Eure scored on more Edenton miscues to make it, 7-0.

Meher’s only trouble came in the top of the third when he surrendered three earned runs before Ahoskie put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the inning.

In addition to homeruns from Porter and Armstrong that accounted for three runs; Cook, Holloway, Eure, Britton and Perry Wynns collected hits that eventually plated four more. Armstrong’s blast, the ninth batter in the inning, sent the Ahoskie fans home happy.

“Maybe it was the heat,” joked Edenton coach Travis Lilly. “Today was just disappointing because I know we’re a better team than what you saw today.”

Ahoskie (6-4) hosted Rocky Mount’s junior team in a single game on Monday back at Hertford County High School field.
