AHOSKIE – Ahoskie Post 102 evened its Junior American Legion record at 3-3 Sunday afternoon.

The local post defeated Cary 6-5 after holding off a late rally.

Cary opened the scoring with one run in the top of the second and then added another in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead.

Ahoskie exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Kyle Freeman doubled down the left field line and went to third on a D.J. Cook sacrifice. Freeman scored on a Shawn Holloway RBI-double to center.

Holloway then moved to third on a Joseph Eure infield single. Holloway scored when Darren Armstrong doubled to left. The two-bagger also sent Cody Ambrose, a pinch runner for Eure, to third.

Austin Britton then hit a three-run bomb to center field to make it 5-2.

Jim Porter and Ryan Lilley were each hit by a pitch before Perry Wynns walked to load the bases. Porter scored on an error to make it 6-2 in favor of Ahoskie.

Cary scored three runs in the top of the fifth to close within 6-5, but got no closer.

In the bottom of the sixth, Holloway, Eure and Britton had singles with two outs to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Cary went down in order in the top of the seventh stanza.

Eure tossed four and two-thirds of an inning for the win for Post 102. Cook pitched the final two and one-third.

Ahoskie had 10 hits led by Holloway, Eure, Britton and Armstrong.

“We are fighters and never give up,” Post 102 Head Coach Wayne Hill said. “We beat a good team today. We got good pitching and the defense did the job for us.”
