Oliver paces Edenton past Ahoskie

EDENTON – Daniel Oliver belted a pair of homers and drove in seven runs to lead Edenton Post 40 past Ahoskie 18-4 here Wednesday night.

Post 40 opened the scoring in the Senior American Legion game with three runs in the bottom of the first frame.

Daniel Oliver had a two-run double and Chad Whitehead drove in the first of his four RBI’s with a single to give Edenton a 3-0 edge.

Ahoskie scored one run in the top of the second stanza.

Judson Smith doubled to center and scored on a Brad Miller RBI-single to close the gap to 3-1.

Post 40 then added three more in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run triple by Whitehead. He scored himself on a wild pitch to give Post 40 a 6-1 lead.

Ahoskie scored two more in the top of the fourth inning.

Zeek William was hit by a pitch before back-to-back singles by Cody Cahoon and Travis Ellis loaded the bases.

Williams scored on a walk to Daniel Merritt and Cahoon came home on a walk to Blake Hill.

A groundout ended the threat with Edenton ahead 6-3.

Post 40 then scored four times in the bottom of the inning, coming on two-run homers by Oliver and Alex Weaver, as Edenton gained a 10-3 lead.

Edenton scored two more in the bottom of the fifth frame thanks to a two-run double by John Hunter, extending the advantage to 12-3.

Ahoskie’s final run came in the top of the sixth inning.

Tyler Burden walked and stole second. Ellis then reached on an error which allowed Burden to move to third. When Ellis stole second, Burden scored on an error on the play to close to within 12-4.

Edenton scored six in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cameron Peed had an RBI-single, Oliver hit a three-run homer, Whitehead had an RBI-single and Evan Holton brought in a run with a sacrifice fly as Edenton took the 18-4 win.

Ahoskie had six hits and used five pitchers. Hill started and went three and two-thirds of an inning. Miller, Tyler Pryor, Braxton Sumner and Dakota Young also pitched.

Ahoskie dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play with the loss.

They travel to Wilson today (Saturday) for a doubleheader. First pitch is 5 p.m.
