AHOSKIE – Post 13 broke open a three-all game with nine runs in the top of the seventh stanza.

That was enough to help the Wilson-based squad down Ahoskie American Legion Post 102 12-7 here Saturday night.

Post 13 opened the scoring with one run in the top of the second stanza, but Ahoskie answered in the home half of the inning.

Kyle Horton doubled to left for Post 102 and then went to third on a wild pitch. Zeek Williams then belted a two-run homer to center to give Ahoskie a 2-1 lead.

Post 102 added another run in the bottom of the third inning.

Tyler Burden drew a walk to get things started. Travis Ellis was out at first on a sacrifice bunt, moving Burden all the way to third. Eli Spruill then walked and went to second on a wild pitch.

Burden scored on a Blake Hill RBI-single to left, giving Ahoskie a 3-1 lead after three innings of play.

Wilson added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth frame to deadlock the score at 3-all.

Post 13 then took the lead for good with nine runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Ahoskie threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hill singled to right and Horton singled to left. Williams then singled to left with two outs to load the bases before a groundout ended the inning.

Ahoskie posted four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Clay Robbins singled to right followed by an Ellis single to left. Daniel Merritt then reached via fielder’s choice erasing Ellis at second.

Robbins came around to score on a Spruill RBI-double to right-centerfield and Merritt scored on a wild pitch.

Spruill came home on a Dakota Young RBI-double to right-center field.

Then, with two out, Young scored on a Marvin Harrell RBI-single to right field. A strikeout ended the game.

Hill pitched six and two-thirds of an inning for Post 102. Spruill, Tyler Pryor, Judson Smith and Brad Miller also pitched.

Ahoskie had 12 hits led by Hill, Horton and Williams, who had two hits each.

“Blake Hill pitched well enough to win the game,” Post 102 Head Coach Brandon Matthews said. “We had one bad inning and it cost us the game.

“We battled to the end and didn’t give up,” he added. “We are getting better each game.”

Ahoskie is 0-3 and 0-2 in conference play. They will play at Edenton Wednesday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
