WINDSOR – Bertie County has done an excellent job returning census forms.

That message came via Akilah Ensley of the Census Bureau at the May 10 meeting of the Bertie County Commissioners.

“We have completed mail out and mail back,” Ensley said. “You had an amazing increase.”

Ensley reported that 72 percent of Bertie County citizens had mailed back their census forms in 2010 compared to 61 percent 10 years ago.

“There was a great increase in the county and in all of the municipalities in Bertie County,” she said.

Ensley said census workers were in the process of going door-to-door to complete the work and that should wrap up soon.

“Thank you all very much,” Ensley told the board. “It’s been a wonderful experience working with you.”

Commissioner J. Wallace Perry said some people received two forms in the mail and had questioned him about it.

“I told them if they filled one out, they should disregard the second one,” he said.

Ensley said his advice was exactly right.

In other business, the board:

* reappointed Tammy Drake and Charles Sutton to the Nursing Home /Adult Care Home CAC;

* listened to a budget request from Bertie County Schools Superintendent Dr. Chip Zullinger;

* approved a $500 contribution to Relay for Life;

* agreed to a new audit contract with Pittard, Perry and Crone; and

* accepted the conditions for a grant to remove abandoned mobile homes from the county.
