Pelham Jones

Pelham Thomas Jones, 86, of Marshalberg died Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Carteret General Hospital.
Pelham was born to Addie Moore and Thomas Chadwick Jones on April 19, 1924. He grew up with his three older siblings, Archie, Neal and Grace in Marshallberg and graduated from Smyrna High School in 1941.
He attended Wake Forest College for two years, before joining the Navy, where he served as an officer for three years. After the war in 1948, he married his soulmate, Margaret Fuller House, of Louisburg and Beaufort.
“Pel” as Margaret called him, returned to school, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Wake Forest. He received his master’s degree in education from UNC Chapel Hill in 1950. His entire career was spent in education, serving as principal in Dabney High School in Henderson, Aulander High School in Bertie County, Northampton High School, then finally coming home in 1969 to serve as principal of Smyrna School, then at the central office for Carteret County Schools.
A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Wagner and Rev. Ellis Bedsworth officiating.
“Pel” and Margaret together raised three children; Pelham Thomas Jones, Jr. “Tommy” and wife Ginny of Marshallberg, Nancy Jones Piner and husband Greg of Oriental, Karen Jones Davis and husband Gary, of Marshallberg; seven grandchildren, Ramsey and Zack Davis, Shelley Piner Rhudy, Abbey and Ben Piner and Travis and Tish Garner and four great grandchildren, Wilson, Caroline, and Elizabeth Garner, and Evett Rhudy.
The family will receive friends 6:30–8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
