Miscues cost Falcons

BEAR GRASS – Jamesville High School edged out Bertie High in the second round of the Bear Grass Easter Tournament here Monday.

The Bullets got the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a Bertie error to take a 4-3 decision.

Jamesville opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the third, but Bertie rallied for a mark in the top of the fourth frame.

Simon Hoggard singled to center and stole second. He then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bryce Cullipher. Zeek Williams drew a walk.

When Williams was trying to steal second, Hoggard swiped home to tie the game at 1-all.

Jamesville added two runs in the fifth to go ahead 3-1, but Bertie again rallied – this time scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 3-all.

Hoggard had an infield single and came all the way around to score on a Cullipher triple to left-center field. Cullipher then scored on a Cody White sacrifice fly to make it 3-all.

Jamesville scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and advanced to the championship game of the tournament.

Cody White pitched six and one-third innings for Bertie, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three.

Hoggard had two of the five hits for the Falcons.

“We didn’t play very good baseball tonight,” said Bertie skipper Randy Whitaker. “We came out flat, didn’t play good defense and simply weren’t ready to play.”

Bertie dropped to 1-11 with the loss and met First Flight in the consolation game of the tourney.
