AHOSKIE – A Como woman is listed in serious condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital following a two-vehicle accident near here Monday.

Carolyn Holt, 36, of Como was pinned inside her 2008 Chevrolet Silverado before members of the Ahoskie Fire Department were able to remove her from the wreckage.

Holt was taken by Hertford County EMS to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital from where she was taken to Pitt Memorial.

The driver of the other vehicle, Commie Futrell, 43, of Ahoskie, was not seriously injured.

According to a report filed by North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Jason Williams, the accident occurred at 10:30 a.m. at the infamous “11-and-11” intersection near Ahoskie. That intersection has witnessed numerous accidents, some resulting in fatalities, over the years.

Williams’ report showed that Holt was operating her vehicle east on NC 11, heading towards Ahoskie. She allegedly failed to yield the right-of-way as her vehicle crossed the intersection. There, her vehicle collided with a 2007 International dump truck, operated by Futrell, that was traveling north on NC 11. The truck, loaded with sand, is owned by Waters & Waters Construction of Ahoskie.

The two vehicles collided in the northbound lane of NC 11, according to Williams. He added that after impact, the dump truck traveled off the roadway to the right and came to rest in a ditch. Holt’s vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway where it struck a guide wire of a utility pole before coming to rest in a ditch.

Williams said charges were pending.
