AHOSKIE – An Ahoskie teen is currently being held in the Hertford County Jail under a combined $1 million secured bond following his arrest on several charges here Wednesday.

Matthew Michael Shelton, 19, of 202 Forest Drive, was arrested shortly after 2 p.m. by the Ahoskie Police Department. He stands charged with four felonies – 2nd degree rape, 1st degree sexual offense, kidnapping and crimes against nature – as well as communicating threats, a misdemeanor.

According to Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh, Shelton is alleged to have followed the victim, a 17-year-old female, to an Ahoskie business earlier on Wednesday where the kidnapping was believed to have taken place.

“From that point, the suspect drove the victim to his residence where the remainder of the alleged crimes occurred,” Chief Fitzhugh said.

Fitzhugh added that APD Officer Joey Parker was at the Ahoskie business taking the report of the alleged kidnapping when the suspect returned with the victim.

“Officer Parker detained the suspect at that point until other officers arrived to further investigate the situation,” Fitzhugh said. “Subsequent to that investigation, Mr. Shelton was formally charged with the crimes.”

APD Captain Michele Garrett headed-up the investigation, one which Chief Fitzhugh said is continuing.
