Williamston stops Bertie

WILLIAMSTON – Bertie High School suffered an opening day setback here Tuesday.

The Falcons rallied from an early deficit, but an eight-run sixth inning lifted Williamston High School to a 17-7 baseball victory.

The Tigers scores seven times in the bottom of the first frame, but Bertie rallied with four runs of their own in the second inning.

With one out, Hunter White drew a walk for the Falcons in the second. Devonte Holley then singled to send White to second. After another out, White scored on a Simon Hoggard RBI-single.

Holley and Hoggard then scored on a two-run single by Bryce Cullipher, who came around himself on a single by Zeek Williams as the Falcons closed within 7-4.

In the third, Bertie got a single from Chris Mizelle with one out. He then stole second and scored when Holley reached on an error to close the gap to 7-5.

In the fourth frame, Hoggard walked and stole second. Cullipher and Williams then drew back-to-back walks to load be bases. After a double play eliminated Hoggard, Cody White delivered a two-run RBI single to tie the game at 7-all.

Williamston, however, rallied with two marks in the fifth and eight more in the sixth as they claimed the victory.

Cullipher led the Falcons at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Hoggard, Holley and William each was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while White was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Mizelle was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Falcons will be back in action Monday when they host the Tigers in Windsor.
