Fike eliminates HCHS

AHOSKIE – Hertford County’s basketball season came to a close here Wednesday night.

Wilson’s R.L. Fike eliminated Hertford County 75-65 in the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs.

Hertford County got 19 points each from Antonio Vaughan and Jordan Jones while Petey Boone chipped in 11 and Dontez Tyler added 10.

Schuler Jones led Fike with 28 points.

The playoff contest was a good one throughout with neither team able to really pull away.

Jimmie Lewis started the scoring for the Demons only to have Jones answer for Hertford County.

The Demons were able to edge to a 7-4 lead when Jerrell Williams had back-to-back buckets, but Jones responded with a field goal to cut the Bears’ deficit to one (7-6).

Lewis scored again and Williams hit a three-pointer to push the Demons to a 12- 6 lead, but Jones scored again for the Bears. After a Jones bucket for Fike, Boone buried a three-pointer and Vaughan hit a field goal as the Bears closed within 14-13.

Williams scored the final bucket of the quarter to give Fike a 16-13 lead.

Jones opened the second period with a hoop that sparked a 6-2 run for the Demons. Jones and Williams added baskets answered only by a Boone field goal as Fike led 22-15.

Jones reversed the trend by hitting a free throw followed by a deuce to get the Bears back within four (22-18), but Fike scored seven of the next 11 to push out to a 29-22 edge.

Dekimis Perry then hit a free throw and Vaughan a field goal to get within 29-25. Williams, however, again scored the final bucket of the quarter to give Fike a 31-25 halftime lead.

Tyler and Jones started the third quarter with successive buckets that got the Bears within 31-29, but a 6-0 spurt for the Demons moments later gave Fike a 29-31 edge.

Vaughan then buried a three-pointer only to be answered by an A.J. Hines bucket. Perry then scored from the charity stripe and Tyler had a three-point play as the Bears closed back within three (41-38).

Fike scored nine of the final 14 points to surge back ahead 50-43 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter started well for HCHS with Vaughan and Boone sandwiching three-pointers around a Jones hoop as Hertford County took a 51-50 lead.

The teams exchanged scores over the next several moments with Tyler tying the game at 60-all with a free throw at the 2:21 mark.

Jones answered with a triple, but Perry hit two free throws to get the Bears back within one.

Fike then hit 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Hertford County finishes the season at 13-8 overall.
