Cooke paces Senior Night win

AHOSKIE – Senior Emily Cooke got to enjoy Senior Night.

The Lady Rams’ starting guard poured in 18 points to pace Ridgecroft to a 46-39 victory over rival Lawrence Academy in the Tarheel Independent Conference regular season finale for the Rams.

Brice Harrison also had double digits for the Lady Rams, checking in with an even dozen. Jennifer White led Lawrence with 12 points.

Ridgecroft jumped out to an early 7-3 lead behind a triple from Harrison and a field goal each from Cooke and Harrison. Lawrence got a bucket from Kendra Spruill and a free throw by Taylor Sexton in response.

White scored to close the gap to two (7-5), but the Lady Rams rolled off seven unanswered to build a 14-5 lead. Cooke and Harrison again had all the scoring for the Lady Rams.

White, however, buried a three-pointer near the end of the first period to close the Lawrence deficit to 14-8.

Spruill and Ashtyn Mizelle each scored from the free throw line to open the second quarter. After Nikki Smith did the same for Ridgecroft, Sexton and Mizelle scored to close Lawrence within 16-14.

Harrison and Lauren Colson each scored from the charity stripe for the Lady Rams followed by a Colson hoop that gave Ridgecroft a 21-14 edge.

Spruill and Sexton sandwiched hoops around a Colson bucket to allow Lawrence to close within five (23-18) at the intermission.

The Lady Rams started well in the third quarter, getting successive scores from Cooke and Sara Hackney to push the lead to nine (27-18).

The Lady Warriors got a hoop from Sexton and a free throw by Sarah Lewis answered only by a Cooke hoop to close the gap to eight (29-21).

Senior Tayler Smith then hit two straight from the free throw line before Cooke hit back-to-back baskets and helped the Lady Rams build a 35-21 lead.

Spruill and Colson exchanged free throws before Mizelle scored at the end of the third quarter to get Lawrence within a dozen at 36-24.

The fourth quarter started well for Lawrence as White sandwiched hoops around a Mizelle score as the Lady Warriors closed within 36-30.

Miller Bryant stopped the spurt with a hoop for Ridgecroft, but Spruill answered to keep the deficit at six.

Harrison, however, buried a three-pointer that gave the Lady Rams a nine-point edge. After Mizelle scored again, Harrison answered on the other end and then Bryant added a free throw to give the Lady Rams a 44-34 lead.

Sexton and Cooke swapped scoring shots before White scored the final three points of the game, leaving Ridgecroft with a 46-39 victory.

In addition to those in double digits, the Lady Rams got seven from Colson and three from Bryant. The Lady Warriors got nine points each from Sexton and Mizelle and eight from Spruill.
