Lady Bears handle Currituck

AHOSKIE – Senior Jaleesa Chinn poured in 23 points to lead Hertford County High School to Northeastern Coastal Conference win number 10 here Tuesday night.

Deondra Morrison had 17 points and Briante Bond chipped in 12 as the Lady Bears rolled to a 61-18 victory over Currituck County High School to secure a bid to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs.

The Lady Bears jumped out to an early lead when Chinn hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the game.

Andrea Parmenter stopped the run with a deuce for Currituck, but Hertford County rolled off the next 10 unanswered and led 16-3 after one quarter.

Morrison started the run with a hoop that was followed by a Camaryn Jones free throw. Chinn then hit her third triple of the first quarter to make it 12-2.

Bond and Olivia Edwards added successive buckets to make it 16-3 before a Kayla Powell free throw established the 16-3 score after one quarter.

Shenisha Grizzle scored for the Knights from the charity stripe to open the second quarter, but Brandi Burden hit back-to-back buckets that pushed Hertford County’s lead to 20-4.

After another Parmenter hoop, Morrison scored from the free throw line and Bond hit consecutive baskets to give Hertford County a commanding 25-6 edge. They led 28-8 at the intermission.

The third quarter started with a Lady Bear barrage as HCHS scored the first 11 points of the period to surge ahead 39-8.

Morrison started the run with a hoop that was followed by three straight scores from Bond. Chinn then hit her fifth triple of the night to establish the 21-point lead.

Amanda Grandy and Parmenter hit the final two buckets of the quarter to get Currituck within 39-12.

Morrison opened the fourth quarter with a score before Currituck got two straight to get within 41-16.

Chinn, however, hit another triple and Morrison added a pair of free throws to push the HCHS lead to 30 points (46-16).

Grandy stopped the run for the Knights, but it was the last score of the game for Currituck.

Chinn added a hoop and her seventh triple in the contest while Morrison rolled off eight unanswered points. Burden scored the final hoop to establish the win.

The victory sets up a first place showdown Friday night when the Bears, who are 10-1 in league play, square off with league co-leader Bertie High School. The Lady Falcons won the first two matchups between the two schools, both played at Hertford County. The Lady Bears will play at Bertie Friday night.
