AULANDER – One Bertie County man lost his life and three others were injured in a single vehicle accident near here late Monday afternoon.

Albert Cherry, 39, of Windsor was killed when the car in which he was a front seat passenger wrecked on Connaritsa Road (RP 1200) approximately four miles south of Aulander.

According to the accident report filed by Troop A, District II Highway Patrol Trooper J.G. Williams, Davon Smallwood was driving a 1999 Nissan passenger car near the Rhodes community at approximately 4:55 p.m. There, Smallwood allegedly lost control of the car in a curve and the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road, impacted a ditch, struck a driveway culvert and overturned.

Trooper Williams’ report revealed that the vehicle came to rest on the passenger’s side, an area in which Cherry was seated.

Cherry was wearing a seat belt, the report showed, and was pinned inside the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the driver and two back seat passengers – Deshaqun Brown, 16, of Lewiston and 19-year-old Antonio Rascoe of Windsor – were outside the vehicle when emergency responders arrived.

Brown was transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie where, according to a spokesperson, was treated and released.

Smallwood and Rascoe were flown by EastCare to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. An attempt to learn of their medical condition was not successful.

While the accident remains under investigation, Williams’ report showed that speed may have been a contributing factor.

Charges are pending.

The fatality was the fourth in the Troop A, District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties) this year. Two of the four have been in Bertie County.
