An unseasonably wet and cold winter by Roanoke-Chowan area standards continues.

While the latest round of winter weather predicted for today (Saturday) will not come close to equaling last weekend’s winter storm, the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Wakefield, Va. does have snow in the forecast.

While a dusting to up to an inch of the white stuff is predicted locally, the snow will prove as the least of the local worries. High winds in today’s forecast, coupled with an already saturated ground, may lead to fallen trees and downed power lines. A cold north wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts in excess of 30 mph, are in today’s forecast.

On the heels of one-to-two inches of rain on Friday, more will fall this morning. Rain will mix with snow after 10 a.m. followed by all snow in the afternoon and evening hours.

Temperatures will fall throughout the day and are expected to bottom out in the upper teens by tonight.

Additionally, the NWS has placed Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Hertford, Perquimans and Northampton counties under a flood watch through Saturday morning.

Expect sunshine to return Sunday with a high of 33 degrees and the overnight low at 21 degrees.

Sunny skies and a high of 41 degrees are in Monday’s forecast.
