One accident in Hertford County left two juveniles injured Sunday in a sledding accident near Ahoskie.

According to Hertford County Emergency Management Coordinator Charles Jones, an adult was pulling two children on a sled when the sled hit the tree.

One of the children was taken by vehicle to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital while the other was taken to the facility via ambulance. The latter was then flown to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Neither was considered to have life-threatening injuries, according to Jones.

Other than that and one other incident, the weekend went by fairly well, according to both Jones and Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan.

“The weekend went very well,” said Sheriff Vaughan. “We had a few vehicles in the ditch, but no major accidents.

“I think everyone showed restraint and didn’t get out on the roads, which is something I hope they’ll continue to do,” he added. “The secondary roads are still rough out there.”

Vaughan said he appreciated the work done by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to make roadways in Hertford County safer.

“DOT has been working all weekend and I mean all weekend,” Sheriff Vaughan said. “I think they are one of the reasons we’ve had such a good weekend.”

Jones said there was another incident involving a DOT truck and another vehicle, but that was the only other major incident.

He said, however, that he is concerned about today (Tuesday) and Wednesday as people get ready to go back to work.

“The problems often come in after the snow event because people are not as careful as they should be,” Jones insisted. “The problems could come Tuesday and Wednesday with people going back to work.”

Jones said motorists need to be very careful.

“Slow down and be cognizant of black ice,” Jones said. “Give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going. You especially need to be careful in shaded areas.”

Jones said motorists should avoid back roads if at all possible and travel as many main streets as they could.

Hertford County Public Schools will remain closed for a second consecutive day today (Tuesday).

HCPS Superintendent Dr. John Fahey said the district spent much of Monday clearing sidewalks and parking lots at the schools to make them usable, but that the roadways still weren’t in good enough shape for students to return.

“We just feel like the back roads are the biggest problem right now,” Dr. Fahey said. “We’re hoping that they’ll clear up more on Tuesday and give us the opportunity to return to school Wednesday.”

Also, a spokesperson for Ridgecroft School said that independent institution would remain closed Tuesday as well.
