AHOSKIE – Two people were charged here Monday morning in a motor vehicle accident.

Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh said that his officers responded to a 10:45 a.m. call at the intersection of Richard and Maple streets. There they found that a Ford Explorer, driven by Tommie Junior Cooper II, 32, of Ahoskie, had collided with an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) operated by Deray Dijion Howell, 18, of Ahoskie.

Fitzhugh said Howell and an unidentified female passenger on the ATV were injured and transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. He added that Howell was treated and released from the hospital, but was unsure of the condition of the female passenger.

Howell was charged with careless and reckless driving, operating an ATV on a public highway and operating an ATV with a passenger, all misdemeanors. His bond was set at $500 secured.

Cooper was charged two misdemeanors – assault with a deadly weapon and careless and reckless driving – and one felony – assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Bond for Cooper was set at $2,500 secured.

When asked to comment on the assault charges, Fitzhugh said, “Those were made through the information obtained by the officers at the scene.”

Sgt. Sgt. Stephen White and Officers Justin Farmer and Leon Hall were the APD personnel responding to the accident scene.

Fitzhugh said that despite the ice-covered roads left in the wake of the weekend’s winter storm, this was the only accident reported in Ahoskie. He commended the public for showing extreme caution while driving Ahoskie streets during this time.
