Murfreesboro is officially set to embark on a new journey.

Tuesday afternoon, members of the Murfreesboro Town Council voted unanimously to place John Hinton into the mayor’s chair to fill vacancy created by the resignation of Lynn Johnson.

The official appointment of a mayor ends an ugly chapter in Murfreesboro’s history – one with the town board and the former mayor constantly at odds that eventually led to the two parting ways.

There was contention not only in the board room, but in the town.

All that can end now.

Now, the town can move forward under the leadership of an individual who is ready to work with the town council to make Murfreesboro a better place to live and to work.

“I promise I will work as a team player,” Hinton said after being sworn in.

That one statement is a breath of fresh air for the people of Murfreesboro. It is time the board and the mayor work together – not in opposition – as the town tackles the issues that lie ahead.

Whatever the issues of the past have been, it is time for the council and mayor to move forward and to work side-by-side to make one of the area’s historic treasurers the wonderful place to live it always has been.

We wish Mayor Hinton and the Murfreesboro Town Council nothing but success in that endeavor.
