SEABOARD — A Margarettsville teen is behind bars after an argument over a weapon allegedly led to him to shoot another teen.

According to Northampton County Sheriff Wardie P. Vincent, his office received a call just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday in reference to a shooting that had occurred at a residence off of Blue Jay Trail.

Vincent said when his deputies arrived they discovered Monique Desmond Jackson, 17, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper thigh area. The victim was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Upon further investigation, the sheriff said officers arrested Anthony Jermaine Gilchrist, 19, of 134 Stencil Lane, Margarettsville.

Vincent said the shooting occurred after an argument broke out between the two teenagers over ownership of the very weapon allegedly used in the shooting. The sheriff added that it was alleged Jackson had a knife in his possession at the time of the shooting.

Vincent said Gilchrist was charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and one count of injury to real property.

Gilchrist was taken to Northampton County Jail where he was placed on a $10,500 secured bond.
