AHOSKIE – Student-athletes throughout the Roanoke-Chowan region were honored here Wednesday.

The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald and Catherine’s Restaurant hosted a luncheon for all First Team selections in football, tennis, volleyball and soccer.

Following the luncheon, the newspaper honored those who have been selected to the All-Roanoke Chowan First Team in a variety of sports. The student-athletes were given certificates to acknowledge their selection.

After a two-year hiatus, the All-Roanoke-Chowan teams returned to the pages of the newspaper today (Thursday). The special section contains photos of the All-RC Teams in the four sports as well as the naming of Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year. “We are pleased to be able to once again honor those deserving young men and young women who have excelled on the field and the court,” said News-Herald Editor Cal Bryant. “We began honoring All-Roanoke-Chowan athletes in football more than 20 years ago and now we’ve been able to expand that to allow more student-athletes to be recognized which is always important.”

More than 50 student-athletes were recognized by the newspaper for their participation in fall sports. The All-region football, volleyball and tennis teams include second second-team selections as well.

Those schools that had athletes honored included Bertie High School, Hertford County High School, Northampton County High School – East, Gates County High School, Ridgecroft School, Lawrence Academy and Northeast Academy.

The special section was made possible by a group of advertisers, including United Country Joe Murray Realty, Gates County Farm Bureau, Hunter’s Funeral Home Inc., Hertford County Athletic Association, Ridgecroft Booster Club, Lawrence Academy Booster Club and Catherine’s.

Student-athletes in other sports will also be recognized by the newspaper following their seasons of competition.
