EURE – Two Gates County teenagers were the victims of a fatal crash near here Sunday night.

North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Glenn Bunch said that Casey Jenkins, 14, of Eure and 13-year-old Whitney Drake of Gates died in a single-vehicle accident on the White Oak Road (RP 1113).

The driver of the vehicle, 35-year-old Alexandra Drake of Gates, the mother of one of the victims, survived. She was transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie and later transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Her medical condition is unknown at this time.

Trooper Bunch said Alexandra Drake was operating a 2002 Buick passenger car, traveling west on White Oak Road less than one-half mile east of Hill Lane Road (RP 1122) at the time of the crash (11:20 p.m.).

Bunch said all three were pinned inside the vehicle. He added that neither the driver nor the front seat passenger (Jenkins) was wearing seatbelts. Whitney Drake, a backseat passenger on the driver’s side, was restrained by a seatbelt.

“It took at least an hour and a half before the first person could be extricated from the car,” Bunch said.

Trooper Bunch was scheduled to return to the accident scene on Monday in an effort to complete his investigation. His preliminary report listed alcohol use by the driver and speed as contributing factors to the accident.

Charges are pending at this time.
