JACKSON — Roof replacements abound in the Northampton County School District.

At their recent meeting, the Board of Education approved bids to replace the roofs on the Central Service Annex building in Jackson as well as Conway Middle School’s kitchen/cafeteria and lobby area. The bids for all three of the projects total $157,205.

Northampton County Schools Assistant Superintendent Phil Matthews brought the matter before the board.

Matthews said $75,000 in the 2009-2010 capital outlay plan and budget was earmarked for replacing the roof at the newer end of the Central Service Annex building located behind the main Central Services building.

“This roof is in poor condition and is experiencing several leaks,” he said.

For Conway Middle School, Matthews said the flat built-up asphalt roof system is failing, creating leaks in the kitchen, food storage room and cafeteria areas. He added the engineer was certain these leaks were contributing to the moisture problem in the gymnasium.

Three contractors submitted bids for each of the projects. The administration recommended the lowest bids—Hamlin Companies for the Annex building at $69,205 and Able Exterior for both Conway Middle kitchen/cafeteria at $76,500 as well as the lobby area with a bid of $11,500.

The board approved the recommendation.
