WINDSOR – Sometimes you’re just that much better.

Bertie High School rolled to its third non-conference victory with nine players scoring as they beat Weldon High School 68-11 here Tuesday night.

Lady Falcons’ skipper Alice Lyons used every player on her roster and actually held the basketball for more than a minute in each of the third and fourth periods.

“No matter what I called, everyone decided to score tonight,” Lyons said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them. When I put in the second unit, they scored just like the first.”

The Lady Falcons ran out to a 23-0 lead before Weldon finally got on the board with a bucket at the 1:30 mark of the first quarter. Despite the score, however, the issue was already decided as the Lady Falcons had pulled out to an insurmountable lead.

Bertie was paced by Ayanna Wilson’s 16 points and 14 from Eboni Bond. The two were the only Lady Falcons in double digits, but lead a scoring onslaught.

Leading 12-0 early, the Lady Falcons put together an 11-point run in the closing three minutes of the first quarter. Monica Outlaw had the bucket that led Bertie down the stretch. She was followed by successive hoops from Wilson, Ebonie Perry and Chaquasja Veale.

With the advantage 20-0 after the spurt, Veale then buried a three-pointer with 2:19 to play in the first quarter to establish the 23-0 lead.

Taire Davis, who led Weldon with eight points, scored on an off-balance shot in the lane with 1:30 to play in the first quarter gave Weldon their first score.

Davis scored again to open the second quarter as the Lady Chargers got within 23-4, but it was the last time they would be within 20 points during the contest.

Ya’Shonti Bridgers scored two minutes later and sparked a 14-0 spurt for the Lady Falcons that lasted until the intermission.

After Bridgers’ score, Wilson had back-to-back buckets before another Bond score that made it 31-4 with 3:56 to play in the second quarter.

Wilson scored again before Bond and Outlaw closed out the first half with consecutive hoops that sent the Lady Falcons into the locker room with a 37-4 lead.

The Lady Falcons kept the run going as the third quarter started.

Wilson got the first hoop of the quarter at the 7:49 mark of the quarter and then Bond buried a triple 45 seconds later to make it 42-4.

Wilson then had back-to-back buckets and Bond scored again before Perry made it 50-4 with 5:35 to play in the third quarter.

Weldon’s only score of the period came when Kerria Brinson hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line to cut it to 57-5 with 41 seconds to play.

That score came after Bertie held the ball for over one minute standing in the corner just over the midcourt stripe. Bertie led 60-5 after three quarters.

“I was able to move some people around and put them in positions they don’t normally play,” Lyons said. “I wanted them to gain some confidence so if I need them to play there later, they’ll know they can.”

Bertie scored the first two hoops of the fourth quarter before Weldon added two of their own. The Lady Falcons then closed out the game on a 4-2 run to make it 68-11.

“We’re young and we’re still learning, but we’re deep and I think that showed tonight,” Lyons closed.

The Lady Falcons (3-1) will travel to Williamston High School tonight (Thursday) for a non-conference outing against the Tigers.
