WINDSOR – Bertie High School Principal G. Fisher Mitchell said he would find out a little about his school’s varsity boys team Tuesday night.

He likely was pleased with what he found out as the Falcons used held off a challenge from Weldon High School to come away with a 65-62 victory.

The Falcons were paced by senior Keon Moore who poured in 24 points during the victory. Wykevin Bazemore (13) and Norman Cherry (10) also scored in double digits for the Falcons.

Weldon got off to a quick start, scoring the first five points of the game, but a Moore three-pointer got the Falcon offense going. After his triple, Bertie outscored the Chargers 13-2 over the remainder of the first quarter to take a 16-7 lead.

Bazemore had a free throw and a field goal and then Moore hit from long range again as the Falcons took their first lead (8-7) with 1:03 to play. Bertie was far from done in the first quarter, however, as Isaac Allen and Moore each hit a three-pointer and Moore added a bucket in the last minute to establish the nine-point edge.

Jaiquaa Jordan hit the first hoop of the second quarter to give the Falcons a double-digit lead, but Weldon came back with four unanswered to get back within 18-11.

The teams then exchanged 6-0 spurts to leave the gap at seven (24-17). Bazemore then hit a hoop for Bertie that sparked a 6-4 run over the final two minutes of the first half. Moore added a three-pointer and Bazemore a free throw to give Bertie a 30-21 lead at the intermission.

Devonte Wiggins started the third quarter with a free throw and Bazemore scored to give the Falcons a 33-24 lead early in the third quarter.

The Chargers then rolled off the next six points to close within three points, but Moore scored twice from the free throw line to push the advantage back to five (35-30) with 3:54 to go in the third quarter.

Weldon rallied back to tie the game at 37-all, but again Bertie pulled away in the closing minutes of a quarter, going on an 11-3 run to lead 48-40 heading into the final quarter.

Moore had a three-pointer on the run while Author Vines added a hoop. Vines, Cherry and Moore all had free throws as well for Bertie.

The Chargers again came back, this time taking a one-point lead (53-52) with 3:25 to play, but the Falcons didn’t go away.

This time, the home team went on a 7-2 run over the next two minutes to put the game away. Moore had a huge three-pointer to rally Bertie from one down to two up (57-55) with 2:12.

From there, the Falcons sealed the win at the free throw line.

Bertie will be back in action tonight (Thursday) when they travel to Williamston High School for a non-conference game.
