AHOSKIE – Oakwood School made the most of its debut in the Lt. Nick Brantley Scholarship Tournament.

Oakwood rolled to an 81-20 victory over Bethel Christian Academy in the opening round of the tournament at Revelle Gymtorium Monday evening.

Oakwood was led by Harmony Simpkins who poured in 34 points and Te’Amber Burke, who had 25 on the evening.

Simpkins got the first hoop for Oakwood on a lay-up and was followed by a bucket from Caroline Collier and a score from Burke as the Lady Eagles built a 6-0 advantage.

Charitee Dunlow got Bethel on the board with 5:50 to go in the first quarter with a hoop.

The scoring was quiet over the next few minutes, but then Oakwood started rolling with a free throw from Lauren Moore and a triple from Simpkins. Moore added another hoop as Oakwood pulled out to a 12-2 lead.

Kelsey Conner responded with a three-pointer for Bethel, but Oakwood went on to score the final five points of the first period thanks to a hoop each by Moore and Burke and a free throw from Moore.

Bethel scored the first hoop of the second quarter, but it was the last bucket for the Eagles before the break. Oakwood, meanwhile, rolled off 18 unanswered points. Burke led the way with 10 points during the spurt while Simpkins accounted for the other eight.

Oakwood led 35-7 at the intermission.

Continuing to use a half-court trap defense and forcing turnovers, Oakwood continued to pull away in the third quarter.

Oakwood scored 15 additional points before the Lady Eagles stopped the spurt.

Elizabeth Farmer stopped the run with a triple at the 2:37 mark of the third quarter.

Burke then hit back-to-back buckets to start Oakwood on an 11-0 roll to close the period.

Oakwood scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, as well, before Conner got back on the board for the Eagles.

Oakwood then went on to secure the 61-point victory.

In addition to the scoring from Simpkins and Burke, Oakwood got 17 from Moore. Bethel was led by Conner with 11 points while Dunlow added four.

Oakwood’s girls met Ridgecroft School last night (Wednesday) in the semifinals of the tournament. Bethel will meet Northeast Academy tonight (Thursday) in the Fifth Place game.
