KILL DEVIL HILLS – The game was one-sided, but the results could be painful.

Hertford County High School rolled to an easy 47-0 victory over First Flight here Friday night, but lost Shrine Bowl selection Antonio Vaughan to an injury in the third quarter.

Vaughan, who leads the Bears in total offense, had already racked up 184 yards passing and 158 rushing for Hertford County. The severity of his injury, believed to be to his shin, will be known later this week.

The game, billed as a showdown between the top two teams in the Northeastern Coastal Conference, was never really in doubt. Hertford County scored with 8:05 to play in the first quarter and grabbed a lead from which they never looked back.

On the first play from scrimmage after forcing First Flight to turn the ball over on downs, Vaughan connected with Monterio Hunter on a 66-yard touchdown strike. The PAT failed, but the Bears led 6-0 with 8:05 to play in the first quarter.

That score held for exactly 12 minutes as, with 8:05 to play in the second period, Ronald Gatling capped a eight-play, 62-yard drive with a 10-yard scoring run. The key play on the drive was a 33-yard pass from Vaughan to Michael Stephenson.

The conversion pass from Vaughan to Dontez Tyler gave HCHS a 14-0 advantage.

Hertford County added to the lead on their next possession. After taking a five-yard penalty and moving back to their own 30-yardline, the Bears got a 70-yard run from Vaughan at the 4:04 mark of the second quarter. Brandon Warren added the extra point and HCHS lead 21-0.

The Bears were in the endzone again less than two minutes later.

After forcing a Nighthawk punt, HCHS set up shop at their own 25-yardline. Vaughan picked up 25 yards on the next play and then found Hunter for a 23-yard gainer. On the next play, Vaughan connected with Larry Raynor for a 27-yard scoring strike.

Warren’s extra point gave Hertford County a 28-0 lead with 2:16 to play in the first half.

Hertford County didn’t score again until the 2:31 mark of the third quarter when Markee White scored on a 15-yard run. The kick failed and HCHS led 34-0.

The Bears were in the endzone again less than two minutes later when White returned an interception 28 yards to the 13. On the next play, Petey Boone covered the remaining distance to paydirt. Warren added the PAT and HCHS grabbed a 41-0 lead.

HCHS scored one more time, this time on an eight-yard scamper by Aaron Thomas with 10:17 to play in the game. The kick failed, but HCHS had more than enough as they led 47-0.

The win boosted the Hertford County mark to 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the league heading into Friday night’s home date with Bertie High. The victory also kept first-year Head Football Coach Scott Privott undefeated in his maiden season at the helm of the Bears.

Overall, Hertford County had 490 yards of total offense, 306 of which came on the ground. The HCHS defense held the Nighthawks to 158 total yards.
