AHOSKIE – It was hard to distinguish what was more colorful – the wide array of bright clothing worn by Native Americans or the equally as breathtaking fall foliage in the background.

Both were on full display this past weekend where the local Meherrin Indians hosted their 21st annual Pow Wow.

The rain held off long enough over the course of the three-day festival for local Native Americans and their many guests to enjoy this historical event.

Featuring the rich heritage of America’s first inhabitants, the Pow Wow, held at the Meherrin Tribal grounds located on NC 11 between Ahoskie and Murfreesboro, served as an educational event.

To the beat of the drum, participants, adorned in colorful regalia, made their way into the honored circle where they performed Native American dance.

This wonderful weekend celebration was full of the traditional sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Native America. Visitors had the opportunity to witness the top Native American dancers perform various styles of dance. Another educational aspect of the annual Pow Wow was a replica of a Meherrin Village located on the tribal grounds. There, visitors experienced first-hand how the Meherrins once lived. Included in the display was a traditional longhouse.

Food and crafts also attracted the attention of the Pow Wow patrons.
